The worldwide innovative RFID technology used by Surfaceslab, brand that develops solutions based on smart surfaces, recently received the Research Award of URSI Portugal and ANACOM, awarded by the Portuguese Committee of URSI (URSI - International Union of Radio Science).

This solution launched earlier this year at CeBIT, the biggest world-wide trade fair in the domain of new information technologies, has resulted from several years of research and development by Vicaima and Creativesystems, together with Instituto de Telecomunicações – Lisbon. This technology brings many advantages in several areas, such as, industrial applications, logistics, bookstores, libraries, fashion and footwear, multimedia, amongst many other retail industries.

Surfaceslab technology opens new perspectives in stock monitoring, consumer interaction and online inventory and enabling that any object identified with an RFID tag in the UHF frequency band is recognized in confined spaces. Research project leader, Carla Medeiros, was awarded representing Instituto de Telecomunicações – Lisbon, Instituto Superior Técnico and Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.

The Research Award of URSI Portugal and ANACOM was established in 2009 and aims to stimulate creativity and rigor in scientific research work in Portugal, through the allocation of an annual award to the best research in the field of radio, telecommunications and electronics.
